One of the ideas that has nourished my work around the serie of paintings Empreinte, is the notion of trace in its double dimension: that which remains from the passage of someone or something, and that which we carve and by which we take action in the world.
The intention to trace is very instinctive. We engrave initials on a tree like we write our name on a wall or a school desk. To make one’s existence palpable, to name, to storytell or to mark one’s territory.
L’Empreinte, c’est à la fois ce qui nous imprègne et ce qu’on inscrit dans le monde. Deux aspects d’une même notion, liés par un phénomène de cause à effet.
L’Empreinte is both what soaks us and what we imprint in the world. Two aspects of the same concept, linked by a cause and effect phenomenon.
L’acte artistique peut agir comme une rupture dans le mouvement cyclique de la mémoire. Il permet une mise à distance. La création met en scène. Elle réarrange, elle réenchante.
The artistic act can allows a break in the cycles perpetuated by memory. It allows a break. Through creation, experiences can be reset, re-arranged, reenchanted.
Le mot figuration vient du latin fingerer, qui signifie modeler avec les doigts, façonner. Ce qui induit l’idée d’acte créateur en tant que transformation, qui vient pétrir la matière du réel.
The word figuration comes from the Latin fingerer, which means to model with the fingers, to shape. Creative act as a shape-shifting process.
